Be Our Guest

Technorati passed the 20 million mark yesterday with a blog from an elementary school in Reims, France, in the heart of Champagne country. They started the blog to celebrate the childrens' running 2 miles in a Relay Marathon.

Not to be outdone, we are introducing guest blogging to this space. Monthly (or so...) our guests will be chatting about nonprofit issues, advocacy campaigns, strategy and hopefully much more. Send me a note if you're interested in participating! ( mara at democracyinaction.org)

What Can Web 2.0 Do For You? And What Can't It?

As Techsoup fires up Web 2.0 week -- a rolling forum discussion here -- get a healthy booster shot of skepticism courtesy of Nicholas Carr's magnum opus on Wikipedia, and the implications of its dubious quality for Web theology.

House Theatens to Gag Affordable Housing Grantees

From our friends (and DIA users) OMB Watch, via our friends (and DIA users) Moving Ideas comes word that more charity gag rule legislation is moving in the House.

This is another defund-the-left shot of the ilk we've covered before. Direct-service nonprofits with an advocacy dimension almost universally advocate left of center; those that do voter registration and the like are, simply by the nature of their constituency, mostly registering Democrats.

Harriet Miers gets better and better.  At least we know it hasn't always been impossible to discern what she thought.

TechSoup Demystifies Web 2.0 for Nonprofits

A free event all next week right here -- all about how slick new communication media can help nonprofits. The announcement is a big cagey on particulars, but it looks like it's going to be done in the discussion forum, loosely structured by some set pieces from the speakers' gallery.

Relevant excerpt:

We will discuss issues such as:
*What is Web 2.0?
*How can you use an RSS feed to receive information and share your own content with others?
*What on earth is a Wiki? How is it better than the old-fashioned Web site?
*What is tagging, and how is it relevant? How can you learn from others' Web searches?
*What are widgets, and how can these new tools help you solve old problems?
*How can an online social network help your organization find volunteers?

If you've been dying to learn the answers and pepper your board reports with such head-spinning Web 2.0 lexicology as, er, "Web 2.0," browse on over starting Monday. And don't forget TechSoup's discussion forums, tip sheets and cut-rate software ... 365 days a year.  TechSoup, which is venerable by Internet terms, is doing its own v. 2.0 redevelopment, too.
