Thoughts on Rootscamp 2010

Simply put: Rootscamp 2010 was a blast.

Salsa Labs was there in force, serving as a sponsor as well as having staff members throughout the conference participating and facilitating sessions (Ali Savino led a session on the future of campaign technology and I led a session on rebranding the party with a values-based identity). We shared lessons and laughs, heard about exciting best practices being developed by smartly-run, data-driven campaigns, and met people from around the world.

I'm really proud to say that Salsa was a sponsor this year and I'm proud that the New Organizing Institute, which puts together Rootscamp every year, uses Salsa for their outreach and online organizing. Check out their new Organizing Toolbox to get involved.

Salsa Weekly Highlight: Ready your donation pages for the holidays

Greetings!

It's the "Salsa Weekly Highlight," your quick hit on what's what in Salsa to help get the most out of your online program. As always, you can find plenty more news, updates, and conversation throughout the week on SalsaCommons.org.

If you're like most organizations, December is the most important fundraising month of the year.

  • About one-third of all donations Salsa Labs processes take place in December.

  • Those December donations each yield about 50% more per gift than gifts from January to November.

So we thought we'd share a few tips you can use to make sure your donation pages are ready for the holiday rush.

Donation Page Checklist

Perhaps the best way to start checking up on a donation page is just to make a donation yourself. Is the link easy to find from your home page? Does the ask make sense? What happens after you give?

Like any other page on your site, donation pages can "age" into obsolescence as your site and strategy evolve. Better an ounce of prevention than a pound of lost donors.

Here are a few areas to give special attention to.

We're hiring in Austin (and DC)

As you know, Salsa has had a presence in Austin - one of our nation's tech capitals - for quite some time.  We're excited to announce that we will have a brand new office space opening in the next few months.  Check out the exclusive first image of what will be Salsa Labs' Austin digs.

The office is going to be killer but we need people to fill it!  That's why we're looking for tech savvy folks for a number of positions.  We're really excited about this expansion and will update soon with more photos of the new Austin office.

Important Info About Your Salsa Donation Pages

Recently, ActBlue chose to turn off their API which connects Salsa pages to their payment (donation) processor. This news was unexpected and unfortunate.

In an effort to minimize disruption for Salsa clients, we took proactive steps and replaced ActBlue with DemocracyEngine.

Your Salsa donation pages are now processing donations through DemocracyEngine, in what was a seamless transition.

You will begin to receive checks for online donations from DemocracyEngine. Their processing fees are comparable to ActBlue and are 4% plus $0.30 per transaction. Their checks are cut weekly and they will be sent directly to your campaign.
