OMB Watch: Arbitrariness Afflicts IRS Crackdown on Nonprofit Advocacy

Our friends at OMB Watch just issued a report that will be troubling to the many cause-oriented nonprofits in the DIA community, especially with election season approaching.

The Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) new approach to enforcing the ban on partisan activities by charities and religious organizations has raised serious questions about the agency's interpretation of the law, about evenhanded enforcement, and about the appropriateness of an approach aimed at deterring speech.

The IRS has bared its teeth at a supposed epidemic of politicking by not-for-profit organizations, with the NAACP the highest-profile target to date.  Whatever one might think in principle about what restrictions should attend the beneficence of tax exemption, the actual standards at work are murky and their application seemingly arbitrary ... with a frisson of the political dirty trickery so illustrious in the annals of Internal Revenue.

If You Don't Like It, Go To Russia

 Somehow, I had made it three times before to Russia without ever setting foot in St. Petersburg, an oversight rectified in time to catch the city lancing its boils ahead of the G8 summit. (But really, were the animal lovers giving away kittens on Nevsky Prospect such a dreadful eyesore?) Pictures bottled up in a digital camera, so make do for the moment with this illustration for Dostoyevsky's White Nights, whose namesake phenomenon was underway for the visit.

Whether and How to Use Myspace

Because you can never get enough of Myspace, here's an interesting breakdown of the pros and cons of creating one for your org. Basically, if you want to reach the youths, a Myspace page is a good bet.

DIA members currently workin' it on Myspace include The One Campaign and Greenpeace. Am I missing one?
