NN11: A fabulous time, don'tcha know!

Netroots Nation 2011 was absolutely fabulous! The people of Minneapolis were welcoming, the convention center was packed with passionate progressives, and I was ready to rock my second Netroots Nation.

Working the Salsa table at Netroots was quite the experience -- with Salsa music blaring from our booth, goofy coworkers on either side trying to convince prospective and current clients to take a shot glass home with them (as long as they danced) and truly fantastic conversations with brilliant thinkers, I caught myself falling deeper in love with the progressive movement.

I learned about so many amazing organizations out there doing incredible work, from environmental groups to student associations, and I hope that I get to help each and every one of them organize online successfully. Corny? Perhaps, but you can't help but want to assist them in achieving their mission when they are this phenomenal!

I was able to sneak away to one panel devoted to bad websites, or, as the panel's title more delicately described: "Current Trends in Website Mistakes." It was fun, informative, and the panelists -- Chris Doorley of Read more...

NN11: Netroots Nation, as always, was a weekend to remember.

Surrounded by activists, organizers and bloggers from across the country and around the globe, Salsa landed in Minneapolis on Wednesday with our Netroots team: me (John Brougher), Lacey Maffetone, Laurin Manning and Tyler Oyler.

We were inspired by speakers like Senator Al Franken (D-MN) and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), we learned best practices from Salsa partners like Jess Kutch at Change.org and Salsa clients like Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the AFL-CIO, and we sang karaoke, danced our feet off, and cheered for the vitality of our progressive movement.

I mentioned in a blog post earlier about how I like to interrogate a conference's very soul, figure out what makes it different and unique. I noted that Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) reminded us of who we are.  Netroots Nation, by contrast, reminds us that we can.

Meeting Jeana Brown, rural activist in Georgia who's been working hard for years to organize unreached communities, reminds us that we can. Meeting Richard Allen Smith, Vice Chairman of Salsa client VoteVets.org, who's been making sure that military ...

Heather Cronk of getEQUAL and Trevor Thomas of Media Matters -- both organizations that are part of the Salsa community -- took part in a Netroots Nation panel called Life Since Vegas: How the Netroots Forced Action on DADT and DREAM. If you weren't able to make the discussion in person, you can watch it above.  Recap and Twitter reactions here.

NN11: Tyler's Take

Photo Attribution: Tyler Oyler

Being at Netroots Nation was absolutely amazing. Seeing so many of our Salsa users out there and using our tools to organize, advocate and fundraise was great! Meeting lots of new people was also wonderful and made me reflect on something that Governor Howard Dean had said: "There's something in this country that is bigger than all of us. And it isn't government.  It is our vision."

Seeing so many of you out there committed to improving your communities and your country is a truly inspiring thing, and I was thrilled I was fortunate to hear those stories.
