Developers of the World, Untie!

Oops, make that "unite"...

One of the most consistent requests we've gotten from our customers is to give more support to those among you who are "developers" -- people building software on our platform, or integrating our tools with their own sites.

We listened, and if that sounds good to you, you'll be excited to hear that we're bootstrapping a DIA Developer Network. This will be our mechanism for getting tech info and support out to the folks who need it, so you can spend less time sweating over implementation details and more time building kick-a** systems.

Membership is free, of course.

Don't Let The Door Hit You On The Way Out, 2005

There's nothing like the end of the year for bringing out the listmaker in anyone -- best/worst of the year past; predictions/resolutions for the year to come; wish lists and thank-you-cards-owed-to lists; and of course, the airing of grievances. Double-Tall Peppermint Holiday Mocha from Board Cafe

An oldie but goodie from Board Cafe, whose mailing list makes at least as good reading for nonprofit staff as for board: its "Twelve Board Cafe Days of Christmas". In the absence of an evident Internet link to this resource, I've taken the liberty of reproducing it in its entirety here.

THE TWELVE BOARD CAFE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
On the first day of Christmas, my board gave to me: A simple, sound conflict-of-interest policy for all board members and staff to sign.

Young Fresh Fellowships

Only 315 shopping days until election day 2006, and that means campaigns and candidates are about to fire up the e-mail blasters and walk lists. The New Organizing Institute is trying to fill the voracious demand for progressive online campaign organizers -- and they want you. The deadline is New Year's Eve. Get writing.

More conventional and open-ended fellowships for organizers, activists, researchers or what-have-you are available through the New Voices program, with a Feb. 13 deadline. They support embarking young professionals at mid-size ($100k-$5M) community groups and nonprofits with salary, professional development and student loan payments.

A Cooler Sun

Welcome news from Sun Microsystems -- they are the first (as far as I know) major computer vendor to ship a server whose prime selling point is low power consumption.

Computers today suck down an ungodly amount of power.  Servers are especially bad, as they tend to stack up as businesses scale -- Google's recent purchase of 30 acres near the Bonneville Power Administration's generator plants in Oregon led to speculation that they needed that kind of power to keep their operations going.  And that's a LOT of power.
