DIA Ticket System Moves

We had a minor support disruption this weekend when our ticket platform made like Skype. If you submitted a ticket up through early Monday, you might have noticed this in the form of a bounced message, which was actually a bit misleading since "bounces" landed in an inbox that we could (and did) still access. As part of the fix, we've migrated the ticket interface and knowledge base to a new location -- so if you've got it bookmarked, update your URLs appropriately (the support at democracy in action dot org e-mail address is also still a valid way to submit tickets). The link is, of course, also reflected on our support page. If it didn't affect you, nothing to worry about. If it did, it should have been minor and temporary ... but let us know if you think anything's been lost in the shuffle.

Google Embeddable Maps Debut

The Mountain View borg strikes again. Google today went public with embeddable maps, YouTube style. Here's DIA's neighborhood:
View Larger Map So just like YouTube, you don't have to face the choice of rocking the API or sending people away from your site to give geographic data. Considering the plentitude of mashup awesomeness already on-hand for Google maps, and the obvious utility for some nonprofits of using geographic representations, it'll be a lot of fun to see how this gets used.

The Ins and Outs of Salsa's API

I first came across Salsa's API quite by accident. As the lead programmer for TriggerID, I was looking to try and integrate one of our products, CampaignWindow, with Salsa for the Young Democrats of America. Many YD chapters around the country are using CampaignWindow for their web presence but also use Salsa (known internally as DEMopolis) for their membership lists, etc. In poking around Salsa I noticed it had a link in the footer for Developers which contained cut-and-paste code for a form clients could use on their site to add users. Wondering if I might be able to automate this, on a hunch I did a Google search for "DIA API" and came across this. [The non-Google path to our documentation hive is here. -ed.] This was a gold mine, listing all tables and associated field names, and though the documentation was all geared towards how to interface with your data via web forms, I decided to try and see if a silent HTTP POST would work too. Setting up a test was easy enough, but due to not knowing one crucial piece of information, it didn't work and I spent several hours trying to figure out what I did wrong. Here's the initial code (in ColdFusion):
