Wal-Mart's Business Is The Nation's Business

Historically, my Nation subscription waxes and wanes -- here one year, gone the next. It's just unbearably wishy-washy; some issues are so sodden with the ennui of being the house organ of vectorless Democrats that only a true flagellant could enjoy.

But among the venerable mag's several mitigating virtues one finds a welcome and still somewhat unusual attention to the role of philanthropy in shaping public life -- a touchy, even risky, topic to enage, but one of desperate importance. The field's recondite opacity has largely defied thoroughgoing scrutiny even by the emergent blogosphere, which hasn't been shy to talk dollars and cents in the political arena. [The pseudonymous Phil Anthropoid's "Hail, Sons & Daughters of Carnegie!" blog is a noteworthy exception.]  The Nation has tackled the ineptitude of liberal funders; the resulting putsch of conservative funders; the ironic roots of (now) left-leaning capital.

2006 N-TEN: Shape the Agenda

We like the Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network, and not just because we won an iPod at the D.C. N-TEN conference.

And we like Seattle, and not just because my hometown Seahawks are a bona fide contender at last. (No, I know they'll break my heart again. Every Seahawk fan knows that.)

So we're definitely marking our calendars for the 2006 N-TEN national conference in Seattle March 22-24. If you're in that part of the country or have the budget to get there, you might want to weigh in on the agenda planning process by voting for your favorite workshop ideas. If you've never been to an N-TEN, do think about making it. Regardless of whether you approach the space as a techie, an activist, a fundraiser, a consultant ... a couple days at N-TEN will broaden your view of online communications like nothing else.

The Company Wants Its Pound Of Flesh

I'm writing this from DemocracyInAction's office at DuPont Circle, just a few blocks from where Chilean agents assassinated their country's ex-diplomat Orlando Letelier and his American assistant Ronni Moffitt 29 years ago.

Letelier had represented Chile's elected socialist Allende government before it was overthrown in a CIA-backed coup d'etat in 1973. America's trumped-up Strangelove Henry Kissinger gave a contemporaneous synopsis of Cold War diplomacy, remarking of Allende, "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people."

Cast Your Ostraka For Hipparchus

It's election day, and as 2 Live Crew once said about the senior Bush, we'll see who's banned in the U.S.A. Or since it's an odd-numbered year, we'll see who's banned in a series of bellwether state-level polls.

Two of the marquee tilts on the card are big DIA users through the for-profit DemocracyInAction.com, which serves campaigns, 527s and other political entities.

Democrat Tim Kaine is running in our backyard for Governor of Virginia, a red state trending blue that figures to be a battleground in presidential elections to come. Kaine totes a small lead over Republican Jerry Kilgore into the last day of what's become a ferociously bareknuckled campaign.
