House Theatens to Gag Affordable Housing Grantees

From our friends (and DIA users) OMB Watch, via our friends (and DIA users) Moving Ideas comes word that more charity gag rule legislation is moving in the House.

This is another defund-the-left shot of the ilk we've covered before. Direct-service nonprofits with an advocacy dimension almost universally advocate left of center; those that do voter registration and the like are, simply by the nature of their constituency, mostly registering Democrats.

It should be clear at this point that it's not just housing providers on the target list here. The sharp edge of this policy was the Global Gag Rule to prevent international family planning grant recipients from even discussing abortion. The endgame is to institutionally sever advocates in every human service sphere from their supporter base and force progressive NGOs and grantmakers to choose between saving people's lives and challenging institutional injustice.

A bill that will likely reach the House floor within the next two weeks
has a provision that would disqualify nonprofits from receiving money
from a new affordable housing fund if they have engaged in voter
registration and other nonpartisan voter participation activities or
lobbying for certain groups within 12 months of applying for the money.
