Salsa Scoop

Salsa Developers' webcast next week

Attention Salsa Developers!

Salsa Labs will be hosting two course/webcasts for SalsaScript and Salsa API developers next week.

During the (east coast) afternoon of January 11th, members of our development team will be teaching a course on SalsaScript basics, including examples from several projects here at Salsa Labs. On January 12th, we'll be hosting a "Master Class" for those who want to dig deeper into advanced practices. We very much hope you'll be able to attend one or both of the sessions.

For anyone who won't be in Washington that week, we'll be webcasting the sessions, too. Remote participants are highly encouraged, and we'll take input and questions from remote participants as well.

Please contact Geoff Harcourt at geoff at salsalabs.com for more information and/or to register.

It's Dec. 31: Do You Know Where Your Fundraising Ask Is?

It's just hours to the end of a year that most will be pleased to put in the rear-view mirror.

If you're like me, your inbox has been filling up this week with nonprofit fundraising asks: the secret of asking during the last week of the year is clearly out. And that prompts an obvious question.

How indeed to be heard in the din?

There must be more tactics in heaven and earth for design and message and creativity than are dreamt of in my philosophy, but I can tell you timing: ask today. I've received dozens of fundraising appeals this week from various sources but so far only a handful on New Year's Eve.

That's an opportunity being missed, at least for any 501(c)3 or other organization whose gifts have tax implications for the donors. In fact, you might want to ask twice today.

Dec. 31 is nonprofit fundraising day. Over 15% of the online gifts that DemocracyInAction recorded for its nonprofit members in all of December 2008 came in the last 24 hours of the year:

Oh, and the average per gift late in the last few days of the year is higher, too.

Don't have an e-appeal queued up today? Do yourself a favor and set up [at least] one before midnight.

Salsa Weekly Highlight: Automatic package upgrades coming in January

Automatic Package Upgrades

Next Monday, Jan. 4, all Salsa accounts will automatically be updated with the new packages for:

  • Email
  • Actions
  • Events (where included in contract)

(From this week's Weekly Highlight email. Click here to sign up to receive it in your inbox every Wednesday!)

It's the "Weekly Salsa Highlight," your quick hit on what's new in Salsa to help get the most out of your online program. As always, check out Salsa Commons for news, updates, and conversation every day.

And allow me to be the first to wish you an only slightly premature Happy New Year! Here's to a great year ahead.

Automatic Upgrades

One of the things we'll be doing to help keep your Salsa account shipshape is automatically upgrading accounts with our newest improved packages on Jan. 4.

The new Email, Actions, and Events tools have each been available for a while. You can add them today in your own headquarters, if you don't want to wait for the automatic upgrade. (And I recommend you do add them right away: they're better.) But those accounts that haven't added them will see them automatically installed next Monday.

Already upgraded these tools? Then like most of our users, you won't experience a thing when we automatically upgrade: you've already got the state-of-the-art installation.

Haven't upgraded yet? You'll see some minor changes in the user interface and some added features to take advantage of. It won't hurt, I promise! All these tools are out of "beta" status and have been extensively user-tested.

In addition to insuring that you're using the best code we have to offer, the automatic upgrade will let us stop spending development time to keep up the older features and invest it in enhancing other areas of Salsa instead.

So, out with the old, and in with the new! It's just the first of many great Salsa improvements you can look forward to in 2010. I'm looking forward to sharing them with you in the coming year.

Snowpocalypse Now

That's some kind of weather.

You can say what you will about social media's culpability in making a dreadful decade, and of course inclement weather has a way of asserting the primacy of the corporeal over the virtual, but at times like these ...
