Taking Picketing Online

And in another interesting note, Italian IBM workers are organizing a virtual picket in Second Life. At first, this seemed kind of pointless to me, but IBM has a substantial presence in SL, which is not surprisingly a great promotional venue/channel/medium for a company like IBM. There have, of course, been online actions before, and even a kind of online picketing and leafletting (Ken Hamidi and FACE-Intel springs to mind). But in virtual worlds narrowly speaking, this looks to be kind of a first.

Taking Organizing and Advocacy Offshore

LabourStart in the UK has been running an email campaign in defense of Fremantle home care workers. The campaign prompted a legal threat from Fremantle, resulting in LabourStart's ISP forcing them to shut down the site. LabourStart and the UNISON public sector union were prepared, however, and brought the site back up offshore at www.wewillnotbesilenced.org. Turnabout is fair play, after all.

A Customer Service Parable, Not That We Would Ever Do Anything Like This

Something resembling this may or may not have been witnessed by a buddy of mine, and it may or may not have been recently: A full-up plane offers its last couple seats to standby passengers minutes before pushing back. A couple of other standby passengers see the desk agent who sees their itineraries, but can't get them on this flight. With the gates closed and the plane already heading for the runway, a (non-standby) ticketed passenger saunters casually up to the gate with the coffee s/he has just purchased, expecting to board. S/he becomes indignant and starts heaping abuse on the desk agent when told that s/he has missed the plane and they're not bringing it back. /cut to the ticket counter

Elbow Room

The whole D.C. staff of DemocracyInAction has been working from home the past week as walls were pulled down to take over more space on our floor. The burgeoning DIA staff now no longer has to hot bunk but will be entitled to one full hour of exercise a day in our expansive new facilities (and a Diet Coke for every line of functioning code). We used to have this wall: Here's what we did with it:
