Maryland: Keep State University Patents Away from Trolls

When state universities invent, those inventions should benefit everyone. Unfortunately, they sometimes end up in the hands of patent trolls, companies that serve no purpose but to amass patents and demand money other innovators and inventors. State-funded universities should seek to accelerate innovation in their states and around the world. Arming trolls with patents does just the opposite.

Maryland legislators have taken a bold step to combat trolls by introducing HB 1357, a bill that would ensure that Maryland state universities don’t sell or license patents to trolls. Instead, universities are incentivized to share their technology with those who will bring new innovations and inventions to market.

Tell your assembly members: state universities shouldn’t do business with trolls.
