Build the California Database Firewall: Support S.B. 54

California must act to ensure that data collected locally isn’t fed to the federal government to be used against us or against our family, neighbors, coworkers, and friends. California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de León has introduced legislation—the California Values Act—to create a legal firewall for data sharing for immigration enforcement.

President-Elect Donald Trump, his surrogates, and appointees have telegraphed their intent to pursue mass deportations among other goals that threaten a free and inclusive society. We fear they will abuse government databases in order to do so.
S.B. 54 contains three major protections when it comes to our personal data held by police agencies (including state, local, and school police).
- S.B. 54 bars local law enforcement from sharing their databases for immigration enforcement purposes.
- S.B. 54 prohibits local law enforcement from responding to requests for personal information about an individual (such as their home address or release date from incarceration) for immigration enforcement purposes.
- S.B. 54 bans local law enforcement from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status for immigration enforcement purposes.
