Who: Advocates For Children of New Jersey
Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-37)
Tony Trongone, Superintendent, Pemberton Township Schools
Renee Whelan, Ed.D., Director of Early Childhood, Long Branch Public Schools
Anna Tupe, School Nurse, Livingston Park Elementary, North Brunswick Public Schools

What: ACNJ will release its 3rd annual statewide chronic absenteeism report and fact sheets by county of high absentee school districts. Assemblywoman Huttle will join ACNJ in calling for the State Assembly to vote on a chronic absenteeism bill (A-2352), which would help struggling schools address this issue. The bill has already passed in the New Jersey Senate. In addition, school officials from Pemberton, Long Branch and North Brunswick will speak on their innovative practices to improve attendance.

Where: Thomas Edison State University, Room TH 103, 111 W. State St. Trenton, N.J.

When: Monday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Why: Chronic absenteeism (missing 10 percent or more of the school year) is a silent and pervasive problem. While many school districts have stepped up in taking a proactive approach in encourging attendance, more work is needed. It is time for New Jersey to take the lead and act by passing the chronic absenteeism bill.
