Many Trenton students rely on school meals to get the nutrition they need to grow, be healthy and succeed in school. In the summer, these children lack access to those meals and families struggle to put food on the table. To combat summertime hunger, the City of Trenton, the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA will be serving meals to children throughout the community this summer. Please help spread the word! Here’s what you can do: 1. The NJ Food for Thought Campaign and the United Way of Mercer County have helped to create and print flyers. Contact Tarry Truitt at tarry.truitt@uwgmc.org to get hard copies to hand out at your programs, events or other places where children and families congregate. 2. Send an email to your networks linking to this webpage that lists Trenton’s summer meals sites, locations and meals served. 3. Post the web link -- http://crctrenton.org/summer-meals/ -- on your social media feeds and websites and encourage parents to visit meal sites with their children this summer. The New Jersey Food for Thought Campaign has also posted a list of summer meal sponsors, along with a local outreach toolkit, flyers, social media messages, sample letters to the editor and news release and other outreach tools to help spread the word. About Summer Meals Meals are served at places where children congregate -- parks, schools, pools, recreation programs and a growing number of libraries. Meals must meet USDA nutrition guidelines, which call for balanced meals that contain low salt and sugar and whole grains. This summer, New Jersey expects to have nearly 1,400 sites across the state serving meals to kids under 18. Not only do these programs provide nutritious meals, they also give kids a chance to engage in fun, healthy activities during the summer months. Please help combat childhood hunger and ensure that children have the summertime nutrition they need to return to school in September ready to learn. Please help spread the word! |
The Food for Thought Campaign is a partnership of the New Jersey Departments of Agriculture and Education, child advocates, anti-hunger and health organizations, statewide education associations and national organizations. |
