Dear Superintendent:

In September, Advocates for Children of NJ (ACNJ) will be releasing its second report on state and district chronic absenteeism data and is currently reviewing the data from the 2014-2015 school year. The report's goal is to again bring attention to the issue as well as identify what steps districts are taking to reduce chronic absenteeism in their schools. Besides the specific data, we would like to survey school districts in order to obtain a better sense of what districts know about chronic absenteeism and to identify approaches they are taking to ensure that more children are regularly attending school. We hope to highlight the survey findings in the September report, so that districts can learn from each other as to what is working in schools throughout the state.

To that end, we ask you or a knowledgeable staff member to please complete the brief survey at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/M52P9CG.  We know that this is the end of the school year, but we would appreciate it if you could complete the survey by Friday, July 1st.  No district-specific information will be part of the report.  If however, a district identifies an exemplary and/or innovative “best practice” that is being implemented to reduce absenteeism, ACNJ staff will contact the district to gain permission to include the best practice as part of the report.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Cynthia Rice at crice@acnj.org or at 973-643-3876.  Thank you in advance for your assistance and we look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Rice, Senior Policy Analyst
Peter Chen, Skadden Fellow
