Action Alert!
Support background checks of family child care providers.

Dear Supporter,

Great news! A Senate committee will consider a bill that would require registered family child care providers to undergo criminal history background checks. Others living in the household who are over age 18 would also have to submit to the checks. Currently, these providers and household members are not required to undergo this critical safety check.

We need to let lawmakers know this is a basic child safety issue and should be supported. Please send a message now – it takes just a minute.

The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Committee Room 1 (1st floor) of the State House, If you would like to attend to support the bill.  Read the bill.

More Info
The background checks would be conducted on home-based child care providers who are registered with the state. The bill requires the state to deny registration if a provider has been convicted of any of the 14 serious crimes and offenses listed in the bill. The bill also requires the state police to notify the Department of Children and Families if a person who previously passed the background check is later convicted of a crime.

ACNJ has been working closely with lawmakers on this common-sense measure that can help ensure children are in safe environments while their parents work. Please send a message today!

Sincerely,

Cecilia Zalkind
