Across the country and around the world, the thoughts and prayers of millions are with the families in Newtown as they struggle with incomprehensible loss.

As an organization devoted to improving the health and well-being of children, Advocates for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) seeks to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and healthy environment.

While the current discussions about gun control are critically important, we recognize that this is not the only solution to reducing the risk of violence to all of our children. A larger informed dialogue about how to prevent senseless acts of violence against children – including abuse and neglect and domestic violence -- needs to occur. We must also do more to address the mental health needs of our children and parents.

While people are feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of this challenge, we can and must do better. ACNJ pledges to support this larger dialogue to ensure that all children have the chance to grow up safe, healthy and educated.
