October 2012 NJ Inches Up on School Breakfast; More Work RemainsNew Jersey school districts fed breakfast to 21 percent more students in March 2012 compared to October 2010. That’s because more districts are serving “breakfast after the bell” during the first few minutes of the school day, typically in the classroom or cafeteria, according to a new report from Advocates for Children of New Jersey. The report documents how districts are easily meeting the logistical challenges of serving breakfast after the bell – and reaping the significant rewards of this approach. The report identifies school districts that are “breakfast champions” and “breakfast underachievers.” Find out how your district rates. South Jersey School Breakfast Summit ScheduledCome learn strategies to increase school breakfast participation and hear about the progress of South Jersey schools that implemented “breakfast after the bell” at the Forging Fresh Ways to Serve Breakfast at School: South Jersey School Breakfast Summit on Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Camden County College-Blackwood Campus. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a forum to share valuable first-hand knowledge and advice on how to effectively implement alternative service models that dramatically increase participation in the school breakfast program.
