Kudos to Districts Expanding School Breakfast

Several NJ districts are launching “breakfast after the bell” pilots or expanding existing programs this fall. We know that serving breakfast after students arrive at school --  rather than before school -- significantly boosts the number of students who get a healthy meal at the start of their school day.

So, kudos to Patterson, Passaic City, Union City, Camden, Little Egg Harbor and the Greater Brunswick Charter School, which are all launching or expanding their breakfast-after-the-bell programs this fall. Garfield and Harrison should also be commended for stepping up and launching breakfast after the bell last school year.

If you are planning a pilot or expansion, please let us know so we can feature your district in an upcoming issue of the NJ School Breakfast E-News.

School Breakfast Spotlight:
Newark Is a Pioneer in Classroom Breakfast

Newark is a state and national leader in providing breakfast to students. Since 2004, the district has been serving breakfast in the classroom to all of its students. Teachers, principals and food services workers say the program is a resounding success.

Newark’s school breakfast program has earned national recognition. According to the Food Research and Action Center, Newark was the top urban center in the nation for its high participation in school breakfast. In 2012, 87 percent of eligible students who ate lunch through the federal school meals program also ate breakfast at school, compared to just 38 percent statewide.
