Video Brunch: The Stranger Among You - Refugees and Asylum-Seekers in Israel

Brunch and Videoconference with Elizabeth Tsurkov
Project Director at the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants

No one wants to be a refugee. But that is the reality for the 60,000 Africans - predominantly from Sudan and Eritrea - living in Israel. Without a coherent policy on immigration for non-Jews, Israeli society has struggled to balance the ideal of the Jewish homeland with the moral obligation to help the stranger.

NIF's family of organizations is working tirelessly to protect the rights of African asylum-seekers, improve their living conditions, and build bridges between newcomers and veteran Israelis. Join us to learn how our activists are working for an Israel that ensures refugees are treated with dignity and compassion.

Elizabeth Tsurkov is a Project Director and Social Media Manager at the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants, dealing directly with improving immigration mechanisms through litigation, lobbying, and public advocacy. Prior to this, she volunteered at the Hotline and labor rights organizationWorkers' Hotline. Elizabeth is one of the founders of Advocates for Asylum, which offers language classes to African refugees in Jerusalem. Elizabeth's articles on social issues have appeared in +972 Magazine, Global Voices Online, MideastYouth, Migrant-Rights.org and Index On Censorship. She holds a B.A. in International Relations and Media and Journalism from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University.
