The Stranger Among You: African Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Israel

A conversation with Asaf Weizen, attorney with the Hotline for Migrant Workers in Israel

Recent headlines of  violence and incitement against African asylum seekers have highlighted the plight of this community, and the complexity of the issues at hand. Since 2005, more than 60,000 African refugees and asylum-seekers – most fleeing conflict in Eritrea and Sudan – have crossed into Israel.

Asaf Weitzen

is a lawyer with HMW, specializing in asylum and immigration law.  A member of the Israeli Bar association, Asaf is an LL.M student at the Center for Advanced Legal Studies, Tel Aviv University, and holds an LL.B from Tel Aviv University.  Asaf formerly practiced commercial litigation in the private sector, and was a legal intern at the Israel Religious Action center, focusing on immigration, constitutional and administrative law.

Hotline for Migrant Workers is dedicated to promoting the rights of migrant workers, refugees and asylum-seekers, and eliminating trafficking in persons in Israel.  HMW’s 3 key strategies are: providing information and legal advice and representation for migrants; educating and informing the Israeli public; and legislation and promoting public policies.
