GAO Releases Report on Extent of Abuse by Guardians

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report entitled "The Extent of Abuse by Guardians Is Unknown, but Some Measures Exist to Help Protect Older Adults."  The GAO report studied whether abusive practices by guardians are widespread and it describes what is known about the extent of elder abuse by guardians and what measures federal agencies and selected state and local guardianship programs have taken to help protect older adults with guardians.  The report found that the extent of elder abuse by guardians nationally is unknown because of limited data on the numbers of guardians serving older adults, older adults in guardianships, and cases of elder abuse by a guardian.

Some efforts are underway at the federal, state and local levels to collect better data on elder abuse and guardianship.  State and local courts are primarily responsible for the guardianship process and have a role in protecting older adults.  Some states are taking measures to help protect older adults with guardians like screening, education, monitoring and enforcement.  Read the full report here.
