NCEA Research to Practice Brief on Mistreatment of African American Elders
The National Center on Elder Abuse has released a new Research to Practice brief entitled "Mistreatment of African American Elders." The brief highlights recent research findings related to mistreatment of African American elders, particularly financial exploitation and psychological abuse. General cultural beliefs, views, and norms within the African American community offer both risk and protective factors that influence elder abuse in this population. Socioeconomic variables, such as poverty, institutionalized racism, and structural segregation also place African American elders at risk. Access the brief here.

Voter ID Laws Can Make Casting a Vote a Struggle
A recent article in The Nation suggests that as many as 218,000 registered voters do not have an acceptable form of government-issued ID now required to vote in North Carolina's primary today. Many elderly people struggle to vote when such laws require various forms of documentation to obtain a voter ID. Required ID can include a birth certificate, marriage certificate, Social Security card, Medicare card or proof of residency like a lease to an apartment. Voter ID was just one of the restrictions adopted by the North Carolina legislature recently. Others include cutting early voting, eliminating same-day registration, and banning out-of-precinct voting.
Many of these voting restrictions make it very difficult for elderly people or individuals receiving long-term services and supports to register to vote or get to the polls. This year's Residents' Rights Month theme "My Vote Matters" will highlight all long-term care consumers' right to vote and participate in the political process. Stay tuned as we provide resources and discuss these important issues throughout the year.
