Nursing Home Evictions Covered on NPR's Morning Edition

Last Thursday, NPR's Morning Edition featured a story on nursing home evictions, specifically a case in which a resident was transferred to a hospital and the nursing home refused to take him back. Consumer Voice's Director of Public Policy & Advocacy Robyn Grant was interviewed for the story.  Listen or read the transcript on the NPR website.

Involuntary transfers and discharges from nursing homes is the #1 complaint filed with Long-Term Care Ombudsmen, according to the National Ombudsman Reporting Data.  The threat of transfer or discharge can be both frightening and stressful for residents and their families.

The Nursing Home Reform Act of OBRA '87 provides protections for residents facing transfer or discharge, including specific acceptable reasons for transfer or discharge, notice requirements, and appeal rights.

Learn about your rights and find helpful resources on the new involuntary transfer or discharge page on Consumer Voice's website.
.
Residents and family members who have received a discharge notice can contact their Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program for information and assistance.

Spotlight on Educational Resources

The Consumer Voice and the National Ombudsman Resource Center (NORC) have a multitude of resources available online covering a wide range of long-term care topics.  Visit the Consumer Voice website and the NORC website to explore all the available resources.  Take a look at this week's highlighted resource:

Transfer/Discharge NORC Issue Page - Transfer and Discharge continues to be one of the top complaints that ombudsmen report encountering, and these cases can be extremely complex.  The threat of transfer or discharge from a nursing home can be both frightening and stressful for residents and their families. Too often, a facility may respond to resident’s difficulties or increasing need for care or repeated questions or complaints from family members by transferring or discharging the resident. The Nursing Home Reform Law of 1987 protects residents from involuntary transfer and discharge.
