The Dream Educational Empowerment Program (DEEP), a project of the United We Dream Network (UWDN) is designed to address the barriers that impede undocumented immigrant youth from pursuing higher education.  DEEP has set out to create a strategically aligned collaborative of United We Dream affiliate organizations, schools, community college and university representatives, and community based organizations working in tandem to (1) insure that as many youth/families are educated about and able to benefit from deferred action and (2) create pathways to higher education for undocumented youth.

On Saturday, October 27, DEEP and Bluegrass Community and Technical College Latino Outreach Office will be hosting a DEEP Conference designed to educate, empower and connect educators and community stakeholders with tools, resources and knowledge vital to supporting undocumented youth in their pursuit of a higher education.  Conference topics and workshops will education participants about:

  1. Current policy affecting undocumented students called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and updates regarding the Dream Act.
  2. Tips and tools for counseling students successfully through the college application and admissions process.
  3. Tips and tools for college financial planning including scholarships and creative fundraising ideas.
  4. The barriers that impede students without documentation from pursuing higher education and list of local and regional resources available to support student success.
  5. Understanding the stress of everyday life as a student without documentation and tips for addressing student disengagement, stress, depression, and hopelessness.

11:40 am:        Dreamer College Success 101: This presentation provides an overview of how educators and allies can support college-bound undocumented students and create “Dreamer Friendly” Spaces within their schools/colleges. It includes information, tips and resources about relevant federal and state policies students can access; useful demographics; and the need to empower students’ self-worth and self-advocacy skills.
