Blue Planet Run, a foundation dedicated to raising global awareness about the lack of safe drinking water, wanted to create a distributed participatory experience to raise money and involve their supporters. Using Salsa’s distributed events and personal fundraising tools, Blue Planet Run Foundation raised $30K to help fund working solutions today for the billion people living without ready access to this life sustaining resource. This fundraising allowed them to provide water for 1,200 students at three Tanzanian schools.
Distributed Events: Getting Everyone To the Party
Blue Planet Run effectively used Salsa's events tool, also known as the "house party" tool, which allows users to create event templates through which supporters can sign up to host locally, greatly expanding the impact of an event.
Moreover, the events that were created all across the country resulted in several media stories, which created a spike in general donations. Using Salsa in an "out of the box" fashion, Blue Planet Run pulled together four different modules by creating content pages and using custom redirects to connect the different steps. In addition to this, they supported their program through auto-responder emails and a series of email blasts.
A Personal Touch: Peer-to-Peer Fundraising
Blue Planet Run (BPR) supporters participated in the 30-Mile Challenge by committing to run, walk or cycle a total of 30 miles in 30 days. Each supporter pledged a dollar per mile. This approach allowed BPR's supporters to be part of their fundraising campaign, rather than just sending in a check or writing a letter. In addtion, it cost supporters $30 to be apart of the 30-Mile Challange which was collected using the event's package.
After making the $30 donation (i.e event participation feel), step two of the signup process allowed the BPR supporters to list their 30-Mile plan as a free event. This encouraged participation of hundreds more people. The super activist, the when on to create personal fundraising pages using the P2P module. Although only a third of these fundraisers actually received donations, the campaign's Peer to Peer fundraising more than doubled the amount of money raised through the $30 event registration. The North Face, which had donated prizes for the Challenge, then contributed matching funds to the donations collected from participants raising a total of $30,000. The mix of participation levels from organizer to donor, to students and participant, helped grow their list by 12%!

"As a small organization, the Blue Planet Run Foundation was happy to be able to create and customize their Salsa account and all the campaign functionality and design entirely in-house in about a month." — Mark Steele, Creative Director, Blue Planet Run Foundation.
