I'm not (as) confused anymore.
Submitted Thu Oct 16 2008 17:04:00 GMT-0400 (EDT)Everything I learned about the internet, I learned from Salsa. Well, okay, Salsa by way of "Tomato," our old, not-quite-as-pretty interface of joy and wonder.
If you have ever called, horribly and terribly confused by technology and frantic because you have no idea what's going on, and I said, "I know how you feel," you should know that I wasn't just talking (although I am very good at talking). I really do know what it's like to be so very very confused by the internet, which is why, after two years, I still do not completely hate providing technical support for the Salsa platform.
I know how insane it feels to listen to someone speak what you're pretty sure is English and yet have absolutely no clue what he or she is talking about. Words like "base url," "css," and yes, even "operating system" were foreign to me, and I just today actually learned how to use ftp (though I've gotten very good at telling others how to use ftp, I am only minorly embarrassed to admit... I actually had no idea what I was saying).
I'm still not entirely sure why I haven't been fired, but I am thankful, because I get to work with an awesome variety of progressive people and organizations. Our members vary in levels of technical expertise, but they all have one thing in common: they're determined to change the world.
