2014 COLA Marks Lowest Five-Year Growth Period In 37 Years

Seniors will receive an estimated 1.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) effective January 1st. This preliminary estimate was recently released by TSCL and shared by other economists and senior advocates. The exact size of the COLA has yet to be announced due to the recent government shutdown. Medicare Cuts Still On Table

The House is working on bipartisan Medicare legislation that would increase premiums and out-of-pocket spending for millions of beneficiaries. The legislation contains three changes proposed in President Obama's fiscal 2014 budget — increased premiums that higher-income beneficiaries pay for Medicare Parts B and D, and, for new enrollees, higher Part B deductibles and a new $100 copayment for each episode of home health care services. Read more »

Research shows that people over the age of 65 are more vulnerable to heating-related health risks. That's why it's so important to have adequate heat in the winter. But with some forecasters predicting a bitterly cold winter this season, senior households could be hit pretty hard. According to TSCL's annual survey of senior costs, home heating is the fastest growing senior expense, and heating fuel deliveries take a huge portion of the average senior's monthly Social Security payment.
