With more than 125,000 K-12 New Jersey students missing too much school, I am writing to urge you, as Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, to post S-3245 for a vote this Thursday. This bi-partisan bill will improve students’ school attendance and their academic success with common-sense measures, including defining chronic absenteeism as 10 percent or more of the days a child is enrolled in a particular school and to require the publishing of district-level absentee data.

Under the measure, schools with 10 percent or more of its students deemed chronically absent would have to convene a coalition made up of key school staff and at least one parent to review school absentee data and work together to develop a school-wide plan to address the problem.

Children who miss too much school are less likely to achieve academically and more likely to drop out of high school. It is critical to involve the school community in solving the problem of chronic absenteeism – and this bill would help accomplish that.

As you know, New Jersey invests billions of dollars in public education. To succeed, students must attend school regularly. This bill advances do-able measures to ensure that happens. Please post this bill for a vote and support efforts to improve students’ school attendance.
