It allows community members to comment on the way issues are being addressed in the media and to influence the topics the local paper may choose to cover. Elected officials often monitor this section of the newspaper and take notice of constituents' opinions.

On Nov. 8, voters will head to the polls to elect the 120 representatives who make up the state Legislature. This is a critical election. The outcome will have a substantial impact on how the state sets policy and funds programs for children and families for the next four years.

All too often, issues that matter to children and families get lost in campaign rhetoric. During this campaign season, the candidates running for the state Legislature should step up and tell us where they stand on these issues, including preschool, education, healthcare and supports for working parents.

And voters should pose one critical questions to their candidates: What about the kids?

Investments in our children reap results, not for just one child, but for thousands of children all over New Jersey. For these children, changes in public policy mean the difference between growing up healthy and strong or facing a lifelong struggle to survive. We need to know where our leaders stand when it comes to our children’s future.
