Israel’s record as a western democracy is one of its most precious assets and a source of pride for supporters of Israel worldwide. Committed to safeguarding human and civil rights, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) is a pillar of Israel’s democracy, bringing precedent-setting litigation to the Supreme Court that has shaped Israel as we know it today.

In recent years however, Israel’s democracy has faced a growing threat - attempts to pass anti-democratic legislation in the Knesset and stigmatization of government critics is creating an increasingly challenging environment for human and civil rights organization such as ACRI. Should this trend continue, the vibrant Israeli civil society that we all treasure will struggle to survive.

Join us for an important and timely discussion with Sharon Abraham-Weiss, one of Israel’s foremost advocates for civil and human rights, on how ACRI’s legal work is making a lasting difference to strengthen democracy in Israel, and on the current challenges it faces.

Sharon Abraham-Weiss is Executive Director of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. Previously, she worked for ACRI as an attorney and also served on the Finance Ministry’s Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. Sharon is a founding member of Itach-Maaki: Women Lawyers for Social Justice. She holds degrees from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, and Harvard’s Kennedy School, where she was a Wexner Fellow.

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel, established in 1972, is Israel’s oldest and largest human rights organization and the only one dealing with the entire spectrum of human rights and civil liberties issues in Israel.
