When You Can't Trust the Headlines: How to Read the Israeli Media

Join us for a special event with Noam Sheizaf, CEO of +972 in conversation with Libby Linkenski, NIF's Director of Strategic Initiatives

This past summer, the headlines about Israel seemed to be everywhere. From the Washington Post and New York Times to Twitter, blogs and Facebook, it was an overwhelming task to discern truth from fiction, fact from opinion or even what was actually happening on the ground in Israel.  In Israel, the media situation is both similar and different, making it a challenge, at times, for Israelis to get accurate information of what is happening in their own country.

To help us wade through these issues and to discuss how New Israel Fund plans to incubate a media montioring initiative as part of NIF-D, New Initiatives for Democracy, are veteran Israeli journalist, Noam Sheizaf, and NIF's Libby Lenkinski.

Wednesday, November 5
7:00 p.m.
At the private home of Debbie Goldman, 4530 38th St NW, Washington, D.C. 20016

Noam Sheizaf is CEO of +972. He is an independent journalist and editor. He has worked for Tel Aviv’s Ha-ir local paper, for Ynet.co.il and for the Maariv daily, where his last post was deputy editor of the weekend magazine. His work has recently been published in Haaretz, Yedioth Ahronoth, The Nation and other newspapers and magazines. He was born in Ramat-Gan and today lives and works in Tel Aviv.  Before working as a journalist, he served four and a half years in the IDF.

+972 is a blog-based web magazine that is jointly owned by a group of journalists, bloggers and photographers whose goal is to provide fresh, original, on-the-ground reporting and analysis of events in Israel and Palestine. Our collective is committed to human rights and freedom of information, and we oppose the occupation. However, +972 Magazine does not represent any organization, political party or specific agenda.  The name of the site is derived from the telephone area code that is shared by Israel and Palestine.

Libby Lenkinski is New Israel Fund US's Director of Strategic Initiatives. Prior to joining NIF two years ago, Libby worked as Director of International Relations at the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) in Tel Aviv, and before that as a strategy consultant to human rights and social change organizations in Israel.

She continues to consult to the online news website +972 Magazine, and is a board member of Comet-ME, an NGO providing renewable energy to off-the-grid Palestinian villages in the West Bank. Libby is an impressive strategist and an engaging speaker with deep knowledge of the political and communal landscapes in which NIF operates.
