Attorney Talia Sasson, President of the largest organization advancing democracy and social justice in Israel, comes to Twin Cities at a time when the very concepts of liberal Zionism and Jewish democracy are being examined and questioned, both in Israel and here at home.

Recent events during Israel’s elections have highlighted dangerous trends in Israeli society, including overt racism and ultra-nationalism. Right-wing parties are already demanding the revival of anti-democratic legislation aimed at weakening the state’s democratic character, such as the “nation-state” bill. This past fall, New Israel Fund launched a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening and expanding the pro-democracy, progressive forces in Israel.

Join us for a conversation about how American progressives, and our partners in Israel, are working to reclaim Israel’s founders’ liberal and democratic vision.

About Us

Talia Sasson is the President of the New Israel Fund. She is an attorney and heads her own law firm, representing organizations in administrative and civil cases in court. Over 25 years, she served in numerous positions within the Prime Minister’s office, the Jerusalem district attorney, and as head of the Special Tasks Division of the State Attorney’s office. In that role she represented the government of Israel at the Supreme Court for 13 years in civil, criminal, constitutional and administrative cases and was involved also with different security and military issues.

In 2004, at the request of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Ms. Sasson served as a special legal advisor for the government and the author of the Sasson Report on illegal outposts in the West Bank and law enforcement on Israelis in the Palestinian territories.

The New Israel Fund is the leading organization advancing and defending democracy in Israel. Widely credited with building Israeli progressive civil society, we have provided hundreds of millions of dollars since our inception in 1979. More about NIF here: www.nif.org
