Residents' Rights Month

October 1, 2018

This week marks the beginning of a month long celebration of residents' rights. Spend time this month honoring residents living in all long-term care facilities, including nursing homes, sub-acute units, assisted living, board and care and retirement communities.  Plus, take time to focus on individuals receiving care in their homes or communities.

The theme for Residents' Rights Month 2018 is "Speak Up: Know Your Rights and How to Use Them." The theme emphasizes the importance of residents being informed about their rights; being engaged partners in achieving quality care and quality of life; and feeling confident in speaking up about what is important to them.

As a part of Residents' Rights Month, the Consumer Voice held the annual Resident's Voice Challenge where residents from across the country submitted stories, artwork, poems, photos, and videos representing this year's theme. We received many thoughtful responses which can be viewed on our website

Residents at Colonial Park Nursing Center in Rome New York put together a R.R.G Rap which stands for Residents' Rights Group. Watch their rap here.

Across the country, Resident's Rights Month is in the news and advocates are holding celebratory events!

  • The Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, wrote a letter offering greetings and best wishes to all observing October 2018 as National Long-Term Care Residents' Rights Month. Read his letter here.
