The Letter to the Editor Section is one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper and can reach a large audience. It allows community members to comment on the way issues are being addressed in the media and to influence the topics the local paper may choose to cover. Elected officials often monitor this section of the newspaper and take notice of constituents' opinions.

An important bill has been introduced in the California Assembly (A.B. 2162) by Assemblymember Kansen Chu of the 25th District.  The Oak Woodlands Conservation Act will provide uniform and economically viable protections for California’s threatened 8.5 million acres of oak ecosystems. 
Many Californians do not realize that oaks are the primary old-growth forest resource in the state—providing food and habitat to more animal species than any other tree.  And many Californians, including me, identify our state with the majestic, iconic oak.  Further, the oak was named the nation’s tree by Congress in 2004. 
Despite this, protections for oaks are administered exclusively at the local level in California, on an effectively voluntary basis.  This has resulted in tens of thousands of acres of oak woodlands being destroyed every year.  Especially with the disruptions brought about by our changing climate, we need to protect oak woodlands to moderate temperature, sequester carbon, and to ensure clean air, healthy watersheds, and sustainable wildlife habitat.  
Oaks also make our communities more livable by providing cooling shade.  The trees store water during rains and release it gradually, thus preventing erosion and flooding, and providing resilience during droughts.
Meaningful protections are long overdue for oaks.  We must preserve our oaks for future generations, our economy, and the many cultural and ecological values they provide.  The Oak Woodlands Conservation Act will do just that.  I urge state leaders and our communities to support this landmark bill.
