Remembering my father, two years later.

Two years ago, on July 19, my father was incarcerated in the Knox County Detention Center on a 150-day sentence. That day, the judge issued a court order mandating the jail to provide him his medication. They didn't. And two and a half weeks into his incarceration – two years ago today – my dad died. My father was 60, and he died on the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. I was protesting at the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Plant in Oak Ridge, TN, that day. I was watching and praying for my friends as they were arrested for civil disobedience when I got the phone call that my father was dead. Today is a personal and powerful reminder that all systems of oppression and injustice are connected, and that we are called to oppose injustice in all its forms. It makes me appreciate my job and the DIA community - this collection of organizations fighting in so many creative ways around so many varied issues to make a better world. I'll be joining with a few close friends tonight to light a candle for the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and for my father, may their memories be a blessing for peace. Also, I've started building a website about my father's story. It's only a skeleton of what it will eventually become, but it has photographs, recordings of his music, and personal statements from members of our family. Please visit David's Story.
