Salsa at La Raza's Annual Conference

12:00 PM Jul 27, 2011

"Do you give dancing lessons?"

This was a frequent question at the advocacy booth co-run by National Council La Raza (NCLR) and Salsa Labs at the NCLR Annual Conference from July 23-25, 2011.

Though we don't offer salsa dancing lessons, we do provide Salsa organizing tools, and we enjoyed talking with conference participants about new ways to speak truth to power -- even right there at the conference.  The team of NCLR and Salsa employees urged attendees to sign a petition to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner requesting immediate action against unlawful foreclosures and demanding increased affordable housing and home owndership opportunities.

Latinos have been disproportionately hit by the foreclosure crisis since 2007.  A recent report (.PDF) by NCLR and the University of North Carolina finds that the economic effects of the recent financial crisis have turned into social effects hurting Latino families -- from affecting spousal relationships and causing unheard of strain on communities coming together to bear the increased financial burdens.

Hundreds of attendees eaglerly signed the online and hard-copy versions of the petition, making their voices heard.
