It's our job to care

I've always been pretty thankful to work with Salsa Labs, but never more so than this past week when I asked, "So… do you think it's okay if I take a couple hours to go to a local rally?" and Awesome Dave (that may or may not be his official title) responded, "Goodness, yes. Go."

As I listen to all the arguments against the rights of workers and unions here in Wisconsin, I notice a consistent theme: Me. From "Unions don't work for me," to "I've never had a union," to "I don't get those benefits, they should just stop whining," the majority of the arguments against workers' rights are made with our personal, immediate, individual benefits and situations in mind.

At Salsa, it is our job to care about more than just ourselves. From the work we do, the people and organizations we work with, and the state of our world, we are expected to support progressive causes and encouraged to take time to volunteer and be actively engaged with society.

Beyond this, I believe it is our job as citizens to care about and protect the rights of workers, to uphold these ideals by supporting each other, regardless of whether we personally will immediately benefit. ( And even though no one sent me a pizza.)

It is our job to challenge our legislators, and I support our legislators when they do their job by standing up (or walking out) in support of quality political discourse.

Even if you don't work for Salsa, this can be your job, too. Choose to support these ideals and advocate for the rights of union workers, and it will only help to make your state and your institutions a better place.
