What Becomes a Blogger Most?

11:30 AM Oct 08, 2005

Juicy Fitzgerald indictments might put Harriet the mouse on the back-burner in Washington buzz. Pending that, there's ample perplexity about how to react to this manifestly lightweight nominee, and the conservative true-believers' sense of alienation (arriving with impeccable timing as the Bush administration collapses) is sparking blogstorms.

Oct. 5: Slate ran this analysis of the fissures of the Republican Party being laid bare by the nomination, noting (not specifically about bloggers) that "[t]he White House listens to these outraged voices but considers them more a nuisance than genuine problem.

Oct. 6: Conblogger Professor Bainbridge picked up the remark and gave it a blog-specific turn, harumphing that "the Democratic Party sees the liberal blogosphere as being inside the tent, while the Republican Party views the conservative blogosphere as being somewhere between an irrelevance and a minor nuisance."

Nothing bloggers like better than blogging about blogs. Let the trackbacking commence!

  • Washington Monthly's Kevin Drum offers some qualifications and postulates of his own on the thesis that Democrats heart bloggers more.
  • Kos gives it a shrug, but points out the liberal blogs raise money, "the first, second and third most important thing" in politics -- and that since Democrats are just getting around to building an intelligentsia machine now, they're in a position to more readily incorporate blogs.
  • Conservative biggies go a bit more taciturn. Instapundit: "I think [Bainbridge is] right." Volokh: "I have no opinion." (is that allowed?)
  • Atrios piles on with "conservative blogs are a redundant cog in an already well working machine. They. Don't. Need You." The gleeful tone, appropriate to the Zeitgeist of civil strife to the starboard, is subsequently modulated with an introductory paragraph that almost says the opposite -- and more intriguingly, points at a Wisconsin blog reporting that an unnamed "very prominent conservative blogger" has been tapped as the new RNC director of eCommunications.

That last one's a touch of interesting gossip -- the very prominent bloggers club is a small one. As to the issue itself, this strikes me as simply a technologically reified version of the ol' insiders/outsiders, masses/elites thing. The difference between conservative and liberal fire-breathers is that one clan is part of a majority governing coalition (if you can call what they're doing "governing"), and the other is not. Disenfranchised parties always have the luxury of giving more rein to their enragees. Right-wing torch-wielders had their moment of triumph with the Gingrich Revolution; the Miers nomination is nothing but its dialectical twin. Lefty types who stayed home in 2000 after enduring eight years of "triangulation" and neoliberalism ought to be able to relate.
