Directories are one of our newer tools, and not that widely understood or adopted. In a nutshell, they allow you to offer your site visitors the ability to query parts of your database for certain types of information. (You control who they search for and how.)

So we were thrilled to see our resident lightning rods Codepink use it to support their now-ongoing TroopsHomeFast.

It starts with this signup page, adding fasters to a special group. This directory, then, makes that group searchable by name and location. Very cool. Adding that layer of interactivity and person-to-person connection is a great way to make a site surfer part of a real community -- the next step beyond simply taking signups and action forms that only go to the organization.

Directories are also good for ride boards, affiliate directories, and all manner of dross. If you're a DIA user, you can get into the sausage-making here.
